Interesting. To say the least. Very very very interesting actually.
To say India is a cricket crazy country is an understatement. A gross understatement. Indian population's obsession with cricket is well known. The players are demi gods. They are stars and are showered with attention. They are endowed with gifts and they endorse products and charge big buck for it. They are lusted after. But all this only when the team is winning.
Lose one match/one series and the adulations and the love turn to major kind of hatred. Homes are pelted, effigies are burnt. Newspapers that spent inches on speaking about your greatness trash you. And you lose the big bucks that come from Pepsi, Coca Cola, MRF and the likes. Oh, did I mention sponsors are hard to come by.
India's fortune has been on the nose dive [here and here ]for a while. There are too many changes in the team. The coach is gone. And the hunt for the new coach is on. Coaching India is a challenge coz of all the public scrutiny and all the mass-frenzy.
Graham Ford was offered the job and he turned it down. Given what happened to Bob Woolmer, the late Pakistan cricket coach, his hesitance is understood. But does that mean that all the foreign coaches are going to say no to BCCI's offer? Dav Whatmore was interested. Will he be offered the job? And will he take it if offered? What about his ego and the very public knowledge that he was not the first choice. How will it affect him?
And does that mean it is time for a desi homegrown coach? There have been a lot of people clamoring for a coach who understands the Indian psyche. Does that mean old players who were lazy bums themselves?
Things just got extremely interesting my dear. Should be fun watching what happens.
Wait and watch.
